Under the Influence
I have an issue with time. We really do not get along very well. I find myself losing all track of it, and then the chase begins.
I was taking my daily scroll on Facebook and came across an abstract painting that a good friend of mine had created. I stopped and admired the color palette she had chosen. I wondered if I could use those colors and create something by beginning with a color palette. I took myself up on that challenge and started a series that is completely different from my usual ethereal, soft, and dreamy photo composite collages.
I started with one image, and I now have a total of 6. It's way out of my comfort zone. I sit in front of my monitor and begin by picking the colors I want to use for the background. After that initial stage is when my brain doesn't quite know what to do. I add the foreground figure and then decide on the smaller figure. She's the one doing all the work in these images. I have to imagine what I want her to be doing, using geometric shapes. I add the necessary round object and then a red or pink dot here and there until I know when to stop.
I was definitely under the influence of that vivid color palette as well as Dali. I pushed myself to try a completely different way of creating surrealistic scenarios using my own photos. It really stretched my imagination to let go of my usual practice of creating imagery and to let my imagination wander into a whole new world.
This series will be included in my upcoming exhibit at Springfield City Hall for October. The show is called "Short Stories" and will have quite the eclectic collection of images sharing their stories. The show runs from October 1st- October 31st. The opening reception is Friday, October 9th from 5:30 - 7:30. Located at 225 5th Street in Springfield, OR.
